If you’re looking for practical steps on how to be present in your relationship, watch this video! Did you know that NEGLECT is a form of abuse? Learn why it’s hard and unnatural to be present as an individual and couple and what specifically gets in the way and keeps us from staying engaged. Of course, eye contact is essential. But learn why that can be extremely difficult at times!

Sometimes we’re actually not here in the present at all. More than being physically present, becoming and staying present mentally and emotionally in relationships can help us feel seen, heard and valued. One of the most common issues partners struggle with is feeling like they’re NOT a priority. So, thankfully, we can LEARN how to transfer the power of mindfulness on an individual level over to how we experience intimacy with our romantic partner!

When our partner is paying more attention to the TV, phone—or really anything else that competes for their gaze and eye contact—we can feel unimportant and unseen. So, we hold the power to either trigger insecurity or create intimacy…ALL with how we show up in our romantic and marriage relationships.

But to be truly mindful and being present in relationship with others can be difficult. Even living in the present moment by ourselves can be hard, especially if we have experienced trauma. Our brains read cues and assess if people and situations are safe or dangerous. An automatic reaction may instantly and undesirably take us back to an overwhelming, negative event. This robs us of our present moments and shifts our focus away from our partner.

So at times we may not be able to help it! But ignoring and neglecting our partner and not having their full attention can produce EXCRUCIATING emotional pain. That’s why BEING PRESENT (as a precursor to listen intently) is among the most important skills for healthy romantic relationships.

So…stay tuned in, stay fully present and practice engaged listening. This will help if you are wanting to create emotional closeness and if you’re wondering HOW TO GET UNSTUCK from tired, old cycles!
