Starting Seeds In PVC (alternative to rockwool cubes?)

I'm experimenting starting seeds directly in the wicking tubes I am using for my WTF aquaponics. In this video I compare the coconut coir and potting soil substrates as it relates to plant growth in the seeding starting or NFT system. Thus should be a good alternative to starting seeds for hydroponics or aquaponics without using rockwool cubes. Rockwool is bad for the environment and it would be nice to find an alternative to rockwool cubes.
