Isn't that Unwound was trying to explore 4 genres at the same times, actually, when you go through all their releases, those Indie, Math, Post and Hardcore vibes where all there. Post Hardcore is a really interesting genre but if something seems to be the "main framework" of the genre is the repetition of riffs and raw angry overall, listening to Fugazi and pre-LTIY Unwound you will call it similar in their base, and that's what Leaves Turn Inside You changes that, December is an amazing track because in any other song of the genre, there would be a heavy riff with visceral screams but now, they laid back on that and makes the song put the emotion, is like a "Post-post Hardcore" where instead of doing raw emotions with complex compositions, you laid back on the raw emotions and embrace the atmosphere just like Slint did in 1991 in the Breadcrumb Trail until that heavy riff hits in the middle of the song.

The most Post-Hardcore song of this album is Scarlette, and you can feel the post-hardcore raw from its texture and riff but even when they should keep pushing it, at some point of the song, they dial it down. For me, that change makes the album so amazing and among my fav albums forever, because now about the production, but the atmosphere, and the entire album creates that unnerving feel between depression, angry and loneliness but instead of blasting it off, "it gave it up", the best song for that is October All Over, the story about a men self-destroying but instead of screaming it but slowly distorting that vocals and just given up is pure emotion.

I love this album, glad you like it but i think you need to re-listen to it again a couple of times to get why is so beloved.

Ive read that "Post hardcore album so good it killed the post hardcore genre". Cool saying even though its very much not accurate but the album nicely bookends the end of 90s and end of Unwound's strong discog. And the things i love about this album are what sets them apart from similar post hardcore bands of their time too. Especially Justin's vocals being less punky and more subdued on the edge of lethargy or the clever tricks like the synth on Treachery, Swirls in Scarlette or Guitar in Look a ghost deceiving the tracks to sound more complex. Id say this album is a grower and ages better after listening to Unwounds albums made before it and it very much feels like a culmination of the bands ethos just like with Fishmans last album or with Fugazi's The argument. This is very much a "fall" album and playing it around october or november improves it just like playing some slowcore albums around that season. Id recommend all other Unwound albums theyre all amazing or bands such as Hum or Failure that are equally cool in a different post hardcore way. Cheers for the reaction
