Never ever put any cleaning solution into the tank. It is going to break down the rubber seals that hold the water inside the tank. This is a horrible idea. Also, in the event of an emergency, the water in the back of your tank is clean water that you can drink.

I do this. It works and only costs me $500-$1000 every few months to have a plumber come repair my toilet. Its amazingly simple and cost efficient.

DO NOT do this in New Zealand. In case of an earthquake the cistern water may be the only potable water available. Keep your cistern clean if you live in an quake prone zone.

Years ago it ruined my toilet because of the bleach contain in the cleaner. After that my toilet gets dirty every other day and it gets yellow and molds really fast, all because the protective layer has got eaten by the bleach. Anyway, don't do it.
