RIP Tom. You gave football fans one of the sport's most memorable moments.

I still feel this is the most impressive achievement on a football field. He beat the previous record BY 8 YARDS, did so to win the game, did it at the lowest elevation of any football field, and had half a foot to boot. When I first visited the hall of fame what I wanted to see was Tom Dempsey's shoe above anything else. RIP Tom and thank you for giving every football fan this.

The 63 yard FG was such an incredible feat in and of itself. Don Criqui calling the play just put it over the top. Just a classic call of a classic play.

I don’t care that it’s been passed, this was the greatest kick in history
Update: this was written before Justin Tucker’s 66 yarder. Incredible

There have been other kicks that tied it or surpassed it, But Tom Dempsey did it first. Greatest kick in NFL history.

I'm from New Orleans. Tom Dempsey's 63-yarder is a legend in local football lore.

A straight-on kick.
By a kicker without half of his foot.
In the final seconds of a game...
Held at a stadium located below sea-level.
Tom Dempsey is a forever legend and may he rest in peace.

I remember watching that game with my dad. We couldn't believe it. I didn't think that record would ever be broken. RIP Mr. Dempsey. Others have broken that record but to me you will always be the record holder.

I remember seeing this game on television. I was eleven. Fifty years later, it still blows me away. Rest In Peace, Mr. Dempsy. A true superstar.

I can't tell you how sad it made me feel to know that Tom Dempsey passed away. I was just 12 yrs old when I saw him break the NFL record longest field goal on national television. It brought such excitement to the sports world. My deepest condolences go out to his loved ones. R.I.P. Mr. Dempsey.

Came by to see this again and pay my respects. I had just finished a book where Tom was with Buffalo and he missed a short FG and got cut. He took it very personally as being a failure to all the handicapped people . He always carried that pressure to succeed and pride with him for all those told "you couldnt do that" because they were different. You done well Tom...RIP good man.

Later that same day in the Raiders game against the Cleveland Browns, 43 year old George Blanda kicked a 53 yarder to win the game at the gun after throwing a long touchdown pass to tie it. Two of the great finishes in NFL history!

I remember watching this as a stunned 9 year old Lions’ fan. Justin Tucker’s kick may have travelled three yards further, but this one really captured everyone’s imagination because Dempsey didn’t just set an NFL record but absolutely shattered the existing one by seven yards! In fifty one years, his record has been exceeded twice by a total of only three yards.

The record field goal length at that time was 56 yards, Dempsey broke the record by 7 yards. I love this recording because you can actually hear the thunderous thud of his foot hitting the ball. One of the lions said he was walking back to the locker room, thinking they had won, and he said it sounded like a cannon going off when Dempsey kicked the ball, now I know what he means. This might be one of the greatest records ever set because Dempsey was in a situation where he had to break the existing record by 7 yards (12.5%) or they lose. How many other cases has a record been broken in a do or die situation? And where else have you ever a heard a record in professional sports being broken by over 10%? Great story.

The coolest part is seeing the plays that led up to his monumental kick. Thanks, Tom. One of the plays that will still be talked about for a very long time.
