Seeing a space marine means your in deep shit, especially if your a guardsman. Though you be lucky if you survive to the point you actually see a space marine.

If you see a space marine, there's a high chance you're in a Games Workshop trailer, and that's never a good time.

Inquisitor : "Despite the suspect being human, I don't understand a world of what they said. Maybe they are talking a xenos language. That's why I called you as an interpret."
Sororita : "Mmm. I see the problem. Have you tried interrogate them BEFORE removing the suspect's tongue?!"

Guardsman seeing an astartes would equate to: holy crap if we’re calling in the big guns that means the bugs we’re facing next are gonna be bigger.

Seeing Space Marines in 40k for the Guard is like a Marine seeing a Spartan II in Halo. You know shit has hit, is hitting or will hit the fan.

If ya see a sister: chances of survival increases
If ya see an astartes: the situation has gone downhill
If ya see a grey astartes: you are done for ×10
If ya see a Primarch in battle: how are you alive... no, seriously, HOW??

The only space Marines I know of that actually stay behind to defend your average man is the salamanders

Meanwhile, the salamanders would fight until nothing is left before they would even consider leaving

I suspect seeing a space marine means you will probably die, unless you are a named character

There you are on an escape transport, rocketing away from your doomed home, you were sure you're going to be left behind by the Astartes when the situation started getting hopeless, but no, they stayed behind and covered the retreat of tens of thousands of your fellow civilians, and as the transports doors close you hear it.
A valiant voice shouting to the heavens,
*"For those we cherish!!!"*
and a hundred answer without an ounce of fear
*"WE DIE IN GLORY!!!"*

Seeing Sisters of Battle: Your detatchment is valued enough to send serious morale support.

Seeing Space Marines: Shit has hit the fan a thousand fold and no pile of Guard corpses is big enough to unfuck the pipe anymore.

From nurse to nuns, having a battlebrat around is always fun.

Read a story about a hive city slowly losing to plague people from nurgle. They sent out a request for help and some iron hands showed up and were a massive help..until they found the item the iron hands were there for in the first place. Turns out the iron hands were already on their own mission and happened to show up just after the help request and never corrected the guard on why they were there. Soon as they got their item they left and the city was back to dealing with the forces of nurgle on their own.

Could be worse, if you see a space marine you're in deep shit, but if you see a gray knight it's a wrap

I find it amusing that while watching Space Marine 2 trailer, there's a scene where the guards bowed down when Titus walks by, knowing that guards in 30k would bump chest with them instead after they're done with murdering xenos.

Another reason the sisters of battle and imperial guard get along so well in setting is because their presence usually indicates reinforcements are coming, and the supply situation is about to get better, or sometimes that the battle's pretty close to being over as imperial compliance is being established on a world.

A lot of sisters of battle are assigned as a bodyguard detail to Ecclesiarchy missionaries, who literally work to bring worlds into the imperium peacefully if possible, but violently if necessary, generally over a process of years or decades. One particularly effective way the ecclesiarchy brings worlds into the imperium is by significantly increasing quality of life for non hostile residents, who eventually end up taking control of the planet due to drastically increased population pressure because they're living longer, having more kids, generally being healthier and eating better ect. And the ecclesiarchy spends a lot of money and other resources to make sure these missions succeed. And a lot of these benefits come to imperial guard units and their dependants in the region too.

So whenever there's a large sister of battle presence, there is a very real chance of basically everything getting significantly better for guard units already there, and often times in the long term.
