Tile shower wall pro tips

Setting tile can be a fun part of bathroom remodeling. I want to give you 4 suggestions on how to go about tiling a shower wall:

1. Start on the back wall of your shower so that the corner grout joint is hidden from sight when entering the shower. This will make it easier for cutting corner tiles and not having to be super accurate. I like to use a manual tile cutter for these cuts

2. Always start out with less than a full tile on the first row of tile. This allows you to be more accurate and scribe cut the first row to meet shower pan evenly. It also prevents large gaps from one end of shower to the other, if the shower pan isn’t 100% level

3. Fold the wall tile into corners. This provides a continuous look with a staggered tile pattern

4. Use a tile leveling system to keep tiles inline with each other and reduce lippage. One of my favorite systems is perfect level master t-lock. It’s a wedge and clip system that allow you to keep tiles flush with one another. Had a super strong clip that allows for a lot of tension

I tile the back wall 1st for the reason he stated; to hide the grout joint. But, I also use this method because it keeps water away from the edges/corners of the CBU. It's good to know that a tile professional uses the same technique. I've always liked
this guys work.

#5 - match tile grout joints with niche opening. That way it does seem like it was an after thought.

I’m glad you’re calling these “suggestions” and not “pro-tips” or “blow your mind best tile trick” or whatever kind of crap a lot of the other clowns do for attention

Number 5-those type spacers aren’t necessary! Especially on this size tile

So on #3, it's better to have a short piece at the shower door than at the back wall?

Your bottom cuts should ALWAYS go on top of the finished shower floor! Level off with a board and start stacking. Then do your pan and set it. Then again, do your bottom row on top of finished shower floor! Just like you would run baseboard on top of finished floor

Great vid, Steve. You’ve used many different tile spacing systems in your videos. Do you prefer the wedge system? I’m personally prone to Rigid’s LevelMax System—similar to the spin doctor—because I can get them in tight spaces that I, otherwise, couldn’t with wedges.

Do you prefer one over another?
