I visited Hartmannswillerkopf a few years ago. The level of preservation is quite stunning and seeing the bunkers and battlefield today really brings the stories to life.
There are big sections of the hill that are still forbidden to enter due to unexploded ordnance etc, but nonetheless it’s definitely worth a visit, even if only for the beauty of the region itself.

Ever since I discovered this channel, among others (metatron, invicta, ect.) I realized just how much I love history. Now I am trying to get my masters in history so I can become a historian.

Thanks for this great episode on the Alsace-Lorraine region. A number of my ancestors came from the Swiss part of Alsace-Lorraine so I love learning the history of the region.

My dear chap I must say the world fall into a sense of nothingness if you weren't here as an educator, as there is some much filth submerged into what is known today as the internet but thankfully some oppertunity to learn & immerse the mind into understanding of the tragedy as well as the extraordinary things that human beings are capable of, in more ways than one & for better or worse.

Can we get special episodes in the "quiet" parts of the front like what the soliders did and were both sides friendly with each other? Did these soldiers fraternise with each other?

Before I found this channel I really knew nothing about WWI. I just thought it was some primitive squabble with inferior weapons and funny hats, until I started collecting WWII helmets and studying the time period. Now I’ve watched so many of these videos that I feel the political atmosphere with all the chaos of multiple huge EMPIRES going to war with each other, and the fear and struggle of the soldiers, guaranteed to die while being pushed at the enemy. I also have started to appreciate the technological and medical advancement as each nation attempted to one up each other with better weaponry and new ways of treating their soldier with physical wounds, as well as severe mental conditions, like PTSD

A few years ago I visited the region, went to the Black Forest, visited Freiburg. I must've driven right past this and never knew about it untill now.

Always wanted to go back to the region again, and this will definately be on the list.

Actually, today is Bastille Day. The inspiration for the German revolutions on the 19th century, and of course the Russian revolutions of 1918. And actually, the Franks that la France is named after, were a collection of Germanic tribes. And actually is a very useful word in English.

I was based at CFB Lahr back in the mid-1980s near the end of the Cold War. Never went to Freiburg. Wish I got the chance.

off the wall trivia: Southern Alsace was once Austrian (the Sundgau, to France 1648).
The German side, the The Briesgau / Further Austria, Outer Austria or Anterior Austria, was habsburg land until 1805.
Anyway- this a great episode, thanks Markus and Indy!
