Do you like the idea of vertical gardening but aren't a big fan of building trellises? Why not layer your gardens to grow them UP like a food forest? Mixing perennials and annuals, incorporating chop and drop, creating a canopy, growing greens and staple crops together - we'll cover it all in this inspiring garden video.

David's Books:

In today's video we look at permaculture gardening and food forest design in a mostly annual system, borrowing ideas from Syntropic Agriculture and more.

I use Moringa trees as my NATURAL trellises. It is the perfect solution for our climbing Vegetables in our permaculture system. Moringa is super easy to plant, simply cut to about 6-8 feet, trim off 12" of bark and plant. The Moringa provides incredible nutrition plus the bonus of being a living trellis. Watching from the Philippines and sharing with everyone I know.

One thing that someone said to me that stuck in my mind a long while ago is to “plant the weeds you want otherwise you will have the ones you don’t want”

I planted an entire packet of bok choi in a 10 ft bed in Autumn thinking it would not come up. It ALL came up and thrived! No weeds, and it is now mid winter and it is flowering with those lovely yellow flowers. Fantastic stuff, so good for you but I agree, I'm sick of the taste of it now lol! My neighbours are getting some and some will go back into the soil.
Love your grocery row gardens, they make so much sense.

I'm glad you mentioned "living posts." I live in Florida, near the beach, so my "soil" is basically sand. Therefore I do container gardening, making my own soil without buying it, with dead leaves, mulch from under trees, weed tea, a little sand and worm castings from spots in my yard. I hang my containers on the trees and bushes with heavy smooth twine and let them climb up the tree branches. I have beans in my mango tree, along with tomatoes, cucumber and peach vine. Adding twine/rope around the tree, tying it to branches helps. I don't want to start staking out my yard and building stuff. Even bigger trees can work for this if twine is wrapped loosely around the trees or extended from one tree to another. I also have a wood fence that lends itself nicely to plants finding their way up, sometimes I help them with twine also. I hang planters off the posts, which keeps the insects mostly away.

Another vote for more of Rachel! As the one who is in the kitchen, I'd love to get some tips from another busy momma. I have nine kids, and getting the younger ones too eat veggies is challenging.
I find it fascinating that you can grow so many different things together.
Here in Virginia, I'm trying to learn what will work. We have got humid summers and a lot of bugs, weeds, and fungus.
Do you have any tips on avoiding fungal issues when everything is packed so tight?

I saw someone in New York build a giant big steel frame for the bean to climb 🧗‍♀️ and the shade that beans create turns into a nature garage space, they park their car 🚗 under that bean trail frame; that’s so amazing 😉 such a brilliant idea 💡
