Before Congress settled on a Covid-19 relief bill that gave many Americans a $600 stimulus check, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders heavily criticized then-majority leader Mitch McConnell for not supporting an effort to increase the checks to $2,000. During a speech, Sanders said that McConnell’s state of Kentucky could benefit from an increased stimulus check, since "10 out of the 25 poorest counties" are located in his state. These types of attention-grabbing stats are made for social media...but is this really legit? Watch to see how we fact-checked it.

this is my first media wise video, and i gotta say, i'm impressed. 🤗
it's truly awesome that you give people the information needed to fact check things for themselves.
a "fact" like the one presented here is easy enough to check thru public census data, so i'm a little disappointed bernie didn't take the time to do that.
one state having 5 of the poorest 25 counties in the entire nation truly is something to be concerned about.
but kentucky keeps reelecting him, so either they don't know, or they don't care.
great episode, tho! 🌻

Ok that's a serious and fair video.

What annoys me here is that i feel that this "needs context" case happens at least 5 times every single time a politician opens their mouth.
Of course you cannot cover all of these claims with your videos.
The conclusion i have here is "Don't politicians just completely ignore your work and just flood their speech with "needs context" claims so that it's easy for them to include a fake statement from time to time that probably won't be checked ?"

It's refreshing to see this channel doing a fact-check of a claim made by the "left". The disproportionate debunking of right-wing claims makes it seem as though the channel is actually a defender of the left masquerading as an educational resource on fact checking. We need more videos like this to balance things out and demonstrate that the channel is neutral. Sure, the right is an easy source of claims worthy of fact checking, but there's also no shortage of dubious claims coming from the left.

When you referenced the list of poorest counties and only found five, was that the same year Sanders made the claim? 3:43
