They became commoditized around the time GPT 4 was released, and you could easily jump from one model to the next. Today with the various dev frameworks that exist, it is simple to create an agentic workflow that draws on multiple LLMs and then ranks results depending on the best answers given.

The problem with models are that their outputs can be used to train a model of a similar level. So by paying to use a model you are slowly giving away the sause that makes your model great and unique.

But that works both ways. If you have a generaly great model but somone else has a model that is better in a specific domain can pay and yoink data to improve your model. So this force tends to even out models over time in the market. After all big companys have the money to pay each other to aquire data.
