Dr. First is a distinguished figure in the field of pediatrics, holding an impressive academic background with B.A., M.D., and M.S. in Epidemiology from Harvard University. He completed his residency at Boston Children’s Hospital and pursued a fellowship in Ambulatory Pediatrics. For nearly three decades, he has been at the helm as the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Chief of Pediatrics at the University of Vermont Children’s Hospital. Dr. First's significant contributions extend to medical education, where he played a pivotal role in developing the Vermont Integrated Curriculum. He is also the longstanding Editor-in-Chief of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics' esteemed peer-reviewed journal. Dr. First's outstanding teaching and mentorship have garnered numerous awards, including the AAMC’s Robert J. Glazier Distinguished Teacher Award and the Joseph W. St. Geme Jr. Leadership Award. His dedication to improving children's health transcends academia, as he provides medical advice to parents through his "First with Kids" segments, and his unwavering advocacy for equitable healthcare has earned him the 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award from the KidSafe Collaborative. Dr. First's legacy is further enriched by his extensive publications and leadership roles in national medical organizations.
