This resonates with me, as a teenager during the 1970s. I used to look up the dictionary as well, making sure that no one could see me do it. My school had a large library, and I used to take books and look up "homosexuality" in the index. But the only thing I could find was a study of suicide, in which homosexuality was listed as a cause. I used to creep back to the library from time to time and look up that book on suicide. Apart from the occasional newspaper reports of people being exposed and ruined for being gay, it was my only source of information about homosexuality until I was nearly twenty.
