I think each learner has his/ her own set of challenges. For a Russian, there's a different alphabet. Pronunciation of certain sounds like R, TH, H, W, and the vowels are also tricky. Grammar is a challenge, too. There are no articles (a, an, the) in Russian, for example.

Present: I am a teacher. They are my students. Teaching is fun.
Past: I was a dancer. It was fun. The other dancers were my friends.
