extending arms in plank is extremely dangerous if the core isn't already developed. the straps can easily slide up the arm to the pits and break the clavical.

how does one "engage my quads"? or "core"? or anything else?

you're cheating on the core crusher by twisting the hips then pulling the knees toward the body. this doesn't work the obliques as much as if you kept the hip stationary and pulled the knees up.
