I like how half of the comments are political and the other half are about last of us 😂

It's weird how this fungus started to come out right when the last of us came out.

The hard thing with fungal infections is that they are particularly opportunistic, which means they usually effect those who are already vulnerable with immunocompromised conditions. This can happen due to numerous disease processes, medication regimens, or inherited genetic disorders. The video brings up a great point that while over 1000 cases have been reported, and that seems like a lot, it’s not nearly what COVID was and shouldn’t lead to a major shut down as we had in 2020-2021.

Entertainment channels have a few various shows revolving around fungal growth leading to zombie like creatures and being the major reason for humanities downfall. I’ve even seen some comments on this thread particularly relating to some of these shows and while the comments are said in mainly in jest, I get the feeling they are also said with just a hint of “but for real though.” While I doubt Candida Auris is going to be the downfall of humanity it is important to note the seriousness of a quickly spreading fungus like this. Particularly in a state where prostitution is legal, and high risk behaviors are encouraged.

Multiple sexual partners is correlated with much higher risk of obtaining many STI’s such as HIV and HPV which both have immune lowering capabilities. Knowing that this fungus is able to spread on surfaces and human to human as the video states leads to a possible public health nightmare if it break outs among the poor and vulnerable. These people are less likely to seek care before infecting others and until it becomes such a major healthcare issue for them, that there opportunities for good outcomes dwindles.

On top of this, it is quite possible for other immunocompromised people that don’t “look sick” to acquire an infection like this. For instance, transplant patients or those with extreme allergies and asthma are often put on steroids to keep the immune system intentionally lower than normal. It’s not uncommon for those with inhaled or oral steroids to get thrush (candida in the mouth and throat). Elderly and Nursing home patients are also susceptible to this infection due to their inherent decreased immune system and then the barrage of medications many of the elderly in the US are on. Finally, the double hit that makes c. auris such a terrible yeast is it is developing pan-immunity to our current antifungal regiments, and it is difficult to identify particularly in labs that are not well equipped.

So what is the answer? Well the CDC has a list of things to do regarding cleaning to reduce C. Auris spread, however for the individual the best thing we can do is wash our hands, and regularly clean our surfaces. Cleaning your car steering wheel and shift knob, cell phone, and TV remote control are all great ways to keep you and your loved ones safe if you have been exposed to someone with C. Auris. Keep your loved ones safe, and wash your hands 😊

Of course there's a deadly fungus threatening the nation. Don't tell us anything about it though either. That's some A+ reporting there.

I have all these symptoms but my healthcare provider doesn’t even understand this, she thought it was a yeast issue

Nice story, might have been important to say what the symptoms are. Just saying...

People who get invasive Candida infections are often already sick from other medical conditions, so it can be difficult to know if you have a C. auris infection. The most common symptoms of invasive Candida infection are fever and chills that don't improve after antibiotic treatment for a suspected bacterial infection.

Thank you for writing out the name of the fungus in your video description. It's informative and not every news video has this information.

The "Last of Us" fans knows what happens next....

But in a serious note, why not explain the symptoms? Even on the CDC website the details are scarce. It looks like hand washing is one of the best, basic preventative measures so we all know how well that will go. If that is the case, this will spread.

If 1000 people in Nevada already have it, it won't be contained.

I love how he's just holding the petri dish with no gloves on, like it's no big deal that he's not taking this seriously 😅
