Healing Church Hurt: Christianity, African Traditional Religion, & Finding a Spiritual Home

Peace Family! I hope you are Well 🤗 As we Know, church hurt is a REAL THING that many of us have experienced especially in the Black Community. To seek refuge from the church, many of us turn to other religions and sources for Spiritual Wellness and comfort which is okay. However, we want to ensure that we are well BEFORE we build somewhere else because we don’t want to build a house on a shaky foundation and that foundation is wishing SELF! So, let’s heal our church hurt!

In this video, we discuss our history with the church and the cause of some of that hurt. We validate our experiences and residual feelings about those experiences. Next, we explore why healing that hurt is necessary BEFORE moving to a new religion or spiritual home. Then, we share practical tools to help us heal from that church hurt. We also delve into Understanding the History of Christianity in Africa (pre-colonization to now). Lastly, we note some points on how to move forward with our healing to find a safe spiritual community, what to look for, and how to differentiate a good spiritual home vs a not so good space in ANY religion. I grew up with Christianity. My family is Evangelical and also have some interesting Deep South hoodoo roots in Galveston Texas, Louisiana. I didn’t find this out until later in my 20s when I met my cousin P (going to remain anonymous on this) and he told me his mother practiced the Dark Arts and was considered a Death Witch. Learning of her and her experiences, led me to want to explore my spirituality. I then decided to apply to study in Cuba to learn more about Santeria. This was my first encounter with Orisha’s and I was invited to a few ceremonies in Havana. It changed my life forever and opened my mind to explore the hidden and mystical sides of Christianity & Catholicism. Yes, it does exist. From Judaism, the Kabbalah & Qlipothic side of the Tree of Life. Islam. Thanks for this knowledge 🦋.

I was really traumatized by the strict Christian community I grew up in. I won't go into it because it's a long, crazy story. However, for years I had to unlearn purity culture, the guilt and shame over everything, and the fears of things like Hell. I'm really happy with this new path I'm on and have never felt this joyful, free, and aligned!

Thank you for acknowledging the shadow in all institutions that are an expression of religion. Too often folks focus on a particular religion as all good or nearly so and others as all bad. It's not that simple.

I felt this video so much because as most black people I have many stories good and bad with the BLACK church. but what I've noticed in myself is I left the "church" awhile ago and wanted to leave religion to really focus on the spirituality of christianity, then in summer of 2021 I felt a calling to study and learn about Kemetic Spirituality, but for some reason I still feel a lingering feeling to christianity as if to apply them both. does this make since? is there a connection between Christianity and Kemet?

I was just listening to Erykah Badu's guided meditation and there was a part in there with some church stuff and it threw me into a tailspin thinking about how much church traumatized me...I exited out of it and this video popped up. My mother was also a minister for a little while and got invalidated. She got sick with cancer and they turned their back on her and us-her 4 kids. She was sick and we were homeless and when she passed, I was lost. It has been 20 years and I still don't have a solid foundation or strong spiritual connection to anything. But for sure the universe wants me to see this video ❤️....thank you so much for your guidance and support.
