Yes, totally agree. All the same, thank the heavens for good mastering engineers!! Me, I refuse to put anything on my master bus other than a spectrum analyzer.

Good stuff! After years of learning so much from this channel (and other sources), I always use the master bus for the final sweetening of things.

It's reserved for a 30 Hz low cut EQ, a gluing compressor like a Pulsar Smasher or elysia alpha, followed by a spicy plugin like Slate Revival or Fresh Air.

Sometimes I switch the order of things if they give me what I want, because being rigid hindered me for years. I now break old-school audio rules that formed me in my newbie years and am happier that way.

After that, I'll maybe use an instance of Steinberg Magneto, which I LOVE. I bought an unopened Cubase 4 on eBay just for it. If not, I'll use Black Box Analog Design HG-2 or Softube Saturation Knob to chunk things up a bit.

It's just seasoning plugins that button up and give that nice sparkle to the final result.

In my amateur home studio, I'll use an Analog Obsession BUSTERse (SSL master bus compressor clone) or stock Reaper compressor, and often a Waves Kramer Tape. That's about it.

I'll occasionally cheat and use a stock Reaper parametric EQ to bump the kick drum fundamental just a hair. When I'm mixing, the relationship between the bass and kick can be really dynamic and I don't want to mess with it after a while if it's sounding good, so I don't think it's a horrible idea to go in at the mix bus level and see if I can get away with an extra 1/2 db or something at the kick fundamental.

And when I'm mixing stuff that's supposed to be retro or garage rock, I'll occasionally set a high pass filter as low as it'll go without making a bump.

💯 This should be common sense, sadly seen too many projects using drastic master bus EQ-ing and unnecessary compression.

A little comp'er 1-2db reduction. Some EQ on the side/diff, .A Pultec clone (Kiive). A stock limiter. If I get any fancier I often make a mess of it.

I can't even imagine who would solve recording or mixing problems in master bus.

if the bass is too low then I am trying to fix that in the mix. Then I can boost a little bit the fundamentals on the master bus plugin right ?

...Just put reverb on everything haha.

Logic Studio VCA (Focusrite RED compressor emulation) or Logic Vintage VCA (SSL bus compressor emulation), nothing much on top...
