I appreciate how carefully Linus & Luke navigate nuance in a world were everything gets painted increasingly black or white. It's one of the main reasons I enjoy watching this show.

When ever an American corporation or politician uses "Freedom" in the title of something, I assume it's going to be just as free as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is democratic.

Firefighter here. Fire regulations are written in blood and making them non-negotiable, even if they truly are uniquely nonsensical in a particular circumstance, means they never slip or succumb to the judgement of people who might not know about the particular subtle or unintuitive dangers a regulation protects against, or to people with ill intentions.

To be clear, Linus is fully aware and is not arguing that point, this is not a response, I just want to give more context.

People can fixate on one locked door, even if there are other escape routes available, and so adding locked doors can actually be dangerous in a way that a blank wall is not. Panic is one hell of a mind-altering drug.

On top of that, like Luke said, these regulations are there to protect against the lowest common denominator. They protect against the unpredictable. Arsonists, illegal use, unusual circumstances. A contractor filling the badminton hall with building materials during a renovation in 15 years, and having them catch fire from a power tool battery while they're having a lunch break in that end of the building, or whatever circumstance you can or can't imagine.

And it should not be up to enforcers to negotiate about. A fire code that is up to discussion is not a code, it is a suggestion. Making circumventing them tedious is a feature.

I'm sure you already have it covered, but I'd suggest hooking the push bar into the alarm system and using one that has a breakable cover or seal to prevent people from accidentally triggering the alarm.

32:00 as a former firefighter, even I am a little bothered by Linus’s “ it’s an empty box “ attitude. You’d be surprised how fast fires can get going.

I do agree, that if the doors weren’t there before, and the regulations were fine before the doors, then the regulations should still be fine after the doors . I just don’t like Linus attitude towards fire safety in general. After the things I’ve seen fire do to people.

If you have one giant room filled with computers and all kinds of combustible things, and then you have a giant empty space next to it, if the temperature gets hot enough, you can have a flash over and that entire empty space can explode.

I’m assuming Linus has not watched the footage of the station fire here in America. That is a great example of what happens when you fit too many people into one space.

I feel like they give fire inspectors too much flack for trying to keep people safe because the station fire is a great example of what happens when the fire inspector doesn’t do their job and they cannot be prosecuted because of the immunity they get.

Linus is saying that we’re not using common sense and then he’s not using common sense to understand that there are reasons why they do everything, it’s just another example of his hubris and ego. In my humble opinion.

“I’m just trying to put some desks in a warehouse”, but what happens when you fill all those desks with electronics and people bring their stuff for the Lan parties and people are shoulder to shoulder..

If you’re doing a LAN party, Linus is comparing all the electronics to bingo. I think he’s forgetting all those power supplies all the electronics all the stuff that can cause fires. I don’t know what the heck he’s thinking here. Seems more like he’s trying to be right than be smart.

Sometimes you need an engineer to sign a certificate so you can do something the inspector isn't familiar with. The inspector is not allowed to negotiate - that's the path to bribery. Also alarmed time delay crash-bars are a thing.
