How to explain Laid-off or Fired in a Job Interview

If you were fired or laid off, I'm going to tell you how you can explain to a prospective employer that you were laid off from your last job. I mean, it happens at one time or another in your career. People get laid off. There's nothing you can do about it. And it's even happened to me. I've been laid off, if you can believe that someone would actually let me go. I know, I'm surprised too.

THIS NEEDS TO BE IN YOUR ANSWER

You want to make it clear that it had nothing to do with your personal performance. In fact, your personal performance was great; they loved you. You have a long track record of excellent performance reviews. You loved working there. You loved what you did. The people liked you. The customers liked you and even your boss went and asked his boss if they could still keep you. In fact, that's actually what happened to me.

This just recently happened to me, but it was a voluntary separation. I was at my job 31 years and had a stellar reputation. After listening to your wonderful videos, I had the courage to seek different employment. When they asked me why I would leave my job after 31 years, I briefly told them what happened — in a very positive way. I took your advice and genuinely told them that I could bring my seasoned skills to them and be a great asset. I ended up landing the job. Thank you for ALL of your tips in all of your videos. I hadn’t interviewed in over 30 years. I nailed the first and second interviews. They told me so. I don’t think I could have done this without you! Thank you!

I was only laid off once, back in 2008. While searching for a new job I also used the time to study and take some IT certification exams. By the time I was hired, I passed five IT exams earning three certifications. These certs helped me get my next job and set me on a successful path.

But the topic of compensation will most likely be asked, and if you, as Don says, "taper it down", there's a potential problem. If the new company's HR contacted the old company's HR to confirm your information (it can and does happen) and it turns out your info is different, you are now either incompetent or a liar, neither of which bodes well for you as a candidate.

My contract ended abruptly (a year early) because the staffing firm violated their contract with the client by violating the non-compete clause. In fact, all workers under that staffing firm were let go.

Lovely lesson. I'd love to know if you can do lessons for people who are shy naturally on how to be bold in an interview.. Watching you from kenya in Africa. Thank you

So I made it to the last round of interview (it was a ~5 months process with various technical rounds) and during that interview the managers asked me about when I could start and how much time I need to give my current employer. That's when I brought up about how I got terminated from my current position (I got terminated without a fault + severance, while I was still in the interview process). I explained about the accident negligence during my previous employment and the rare circumstance that led to it, as well, I explained what I learned from my mistake. However, next day they got back to me telling me they chose not to move forward with me because of "skill gap". The funny thing is in the past few months they were praising my skills and how they thought I was a good cultural fit.

unfortunately you need to separate the topics "laid off" OR "fired". the 2 have different perceptions

They might lay off only you because you are the weakest member of a team and they don't need you. That doesn't mean you have poor performance as long as you were delivery the level of service they hired you for. The same could have to the strongest member of the team if they are paying too much. Lay offs are done strictly for profit reasons, there is no failure on your part. It doesn't even have to be a massive lay off. They may even want to change service and go in another direction and they don't need your service any longer. They are your customer and can do what they want.
