What I especially like is that Joel always treated Harry as an equal and given the time that was something, but he also understood the time. When they begin bonding over music, Harry sees Joel checking him out. Joel pulls back out of gay panic. Harry has to let Joel make the first move. Could you imagine what would happen to a gay black man in the 40s for making a pass at a white man. So Harry not understanding why Joel pulled away explains that Celia is not his birth mother. Celia is the daughter of Joel's father. This was a subtle. Hey man, I'm down, plus I'm not your nephew if you are worried about that.
Given the amount of incest in this series, it makes this the most normal relationship on the show.
