There are only 3 ways of fighting empty-handed. Submissions/limb breaking, strikes, and throws. There are a finite amount of techniques to be applied to a martial art. I've studied many martial arts and I can tell you 30% are real and the other 70% are bullshido. If there is no sparring at the gym, they usually don't know what they are talking about. Unless your moveset is stress tested and you're used to using your martial art under pressure, you're most likely going to be useless when you need to defend yourself.

When I did karate if you didn’t show up u didn’t get a belt I did it for six years and got my blue stripe and you had to be 16 to get your black stripe
