Five big picture ideas you need to know for APUSH Period 4.

1.Starting with the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800, this was the glory days of the Democratic-Republicans in the Oval Office! Having one party dominating the executive and legislative branch led to the era of Good Feelings.

2. Universal white male suffrage was slowly expanding, especially in the western states. This led to the election of Andrew Jackson in 1828, America’s first “common” president.

3.The Market Revolution took place in the 1830s and 1840s. This period of innovation led to new inventions in textile factories, mechanized agriculture, and the telegraph. The steam engine also launched the transportation revolution with the introduction of railroads and steamboats.

4. Henry Clay- Henry Clay was like the new Hamilton, proposing his American System which promoted manufacturing, government funded infrastructure, and the Second National Bank. Clay was also known as the Great Compromiser after proposing the Missouri Compromise in 1820, which maintained the balance of free and slave states.

5. The Second Great Awakening. After seeing the problems associated with urbanization and industrialization, America saw a religious revival. Churches and the new middle class worked for moral and social reforms to fix the ills of society, including the movements for abolition, women’s rights, and temperance.
