Today we talk walk through a complete build of a two tier retaining wall from start to finish. This includes setting the grade for the base preparation, using non-woven geotextile, compaction of the base material, setting the initial course of the wall, building it up, installing drainage pipe, and the final installation of the caps on top of everything else.

Awesome work! Question on the drainage if you don’t mind. At which layer or “ of the bedding material is the drainage pipe inserted?

- 6-8” of 3/4” clear stone
- 1-2” of HPB
- 6” of first wall block

Great video.

QUESTION: My landscaper is building a similar height retaining wall to this video. Just one tier of the same height. He framed it with wood and rebar across inside to pour concrete in it.
-- What is the depth BELOW grade that he should excavate so the concrete holds?
-- Any other materials needed beyond rebar? Any advice & vids on such concrete builds?

Looks great! What is the brand for the blocks/top cap you used? I love that look

Just what I needed. I am about to start a 2 teir wall, both 1.5 feet tall. Will have a 5 foot distance between the two walls. Both walls will be about 40 feet long. Would like to see your uncut version but the link does not work.

Looked pretty good on the mini, video was to fast to really see. With the machines its just time in the saddle, just keep using em and youll pick up more tricks and techniques as you go.

I guess one thing to mention, if you have access to a flat bucket it can come in handy to fine tune the sub grade after the bulk of the digging has been done with the tooth bucket.

Either way love your base prep with the fabric and everything, so clean, so nice.

My question is does this count as 1 height or 2 seperate heights. In my area anything over 4 ft needs building permit. If i make two 3 foot walls will it count as 6 feet or two 3 ft retaining walls might be stupid question

Looked like a fun job!! Even though you tamped the 3/4", doesn't the HPB migrate or sink into the 3/4" over time or does the 3/4" act like a large version of HPB since it's angular?
As for tips with the back hoe, don't be a hog, let someone else have a turn 😅

i see the same rule all over the internet “distance between walls shound be double the height of the lower wall” however does everyone actually follow this rule??? i feel like i never see retaining walls around that follow this. instead, i see the distance between the walls being equal to the height of the lower wall. i’m not saying it’s right but is it common for people to not follow the guidelines when it comes to retaining walls???

Damn dude, do you not have any employees? The first thing I did when I started 10 years ago was to get at least one guy to push the heavy loads while I was operating the machine and doing the fine measurements
