What did you guys think? Am I wrong? Did you learn a different way? Should I have mentioned something else? Let me know!

If you're ever stressed about kanji, remember, there are literally kanji reading competitions (they're more like voluntary exams, but there are leader boards) in Japan for Japanese speakers, because there are so many kanji and possible ways of reading them, that the majority of people living in Japan don't use them. Nobody will expect you to be an expert in all kanji.

The exceptional readings are either so uncommon that you can forget about it, or so common that you're going to remember it quite easily, like the readings of 日.

Extremely extremely helpful for those of us who are just starting out learning the Kenji and are confused by how to even process what is presented by a dictionary. I learned German and Spanish in college, so I’m just picking up Japanese for fun and to aid in the consumption of media, but in Japanese dictionaries or a far more daunting task than simply a process of look up, and then reverse, look up to clarify. Yes sir have my admiration for conquering such an impressive challenge. Keep going with the great content.

This is by far the best way it has been explained to me. I've tried reading articles on the subject, but they were always word salads. This was straight to the point, and was very clear. I finally have an understanding on how to know when to use On'yomi and Kun'yomi. I'm trying to self teach myself Japanese by slowly translating a book that's in Japanese, but I was having such a tough time on how to differentiate between On'yomi and Kun'yomi. Thank you so much!

As an アミリカン人, in all my 大人 years I’ve never seen such a clear and easy to understand explanation! But what do I know, I’m just 一人. This 男の人 knows his stuff! (seriously, great video!)

Oh my! I've tried studying Japanese for ages. I'm going back into reading it casually. And I've always felt overwhelmed by Kun'yomi and On'yomi. Your explanation is brilliant. Thank you so much! I can now study with some more clarity. :)

Great explanation! Kanji can feel overwhelming with all the readings. I’ve studied Japanese over 6 years, and started studying Mandarin this year for an upcoming trip. I cried because all the “Kanji” have just one “reading” in Mandarin!! (Facepalm)

My Chinese friends didn’t understand until I started showing all the readings of 生。。。 😂 笑笑

I've personally found that the best way to learn kanji readings is to internalize the key pattern between Onyomi and Kunyomi that you mentioned, and then not worry about readings for specific characters and focus on vocabulary instead.

I found this channel today and I am about a year into learning Japanese. You deserve more subs, really fun lesson plus you got street cred since you are in Japan and have a 叔父テレビ. I have a suggestion for a lesson best way to say maybe Japanese although it might be a hour long. 次の動画を楽しみにしています 👏🤜

So what I'm hearing is that we need to learn both readings and just assume that we are right when reading it out loud. I've seen in multiple places that context also helps with the reading. I'm just not there yet so for now the kanji means two things always, sometimes 3

this was in fact super helpful but partly because i'm a linguist and i finally learned how to describe this in linguistic terms. It's like free morphemes and bound morphemes for example. anyway, thanks for this. I think I have a new relationship to kanji now
