Nice! If you're going to do a modern engine swap, that is the one to do. Quite frankly, anything but an LS at this point in the world. 🤣

Wow I’ve got the same truck red/gray, 100yrs ago I put a 429 cobra jet in it, and life took over been sitting under my awning forever! Has a custom front tilt hood/fenders, ITS time to move into my shop, love these trucks! Had mine since high school, 1988. Mom was second owner.

From my experience the areas that leak the most on the 351m/400 engines are the valve covers and front/rear crank seals. Old technology and older materials. New materials with an emphasis on leak-free engines are better.

I know that T. Meyer has a fix for the rear main seal with a one piece conversion. It requires engine removal but so does a reliable replacement in the driveway.

The front seal is a pain to replace because you have to remove everything from the engine front but can be done while the engine is still inside the bay. Sleeves are available for the crank snout if yours is scored.

The valve covers can be helped by epoxying some 1/2 inch tall risers that mirror the valve cover mounting to the heads and raising the oil splash wall from the rockers. Think moving the potential leak point higher. Then use modern rubber gaskets and milled aluminum valve covers (stamped steel ones leak from the factory). Freeing up drain-back holes in the heads will help prevent oil pooling in the upper head. Lastly, finding a way to safely limit the amount of oil pushed up to the rockers does more to stem the flow than anything else. But, it is a fine line between oil starvation and oil saturation. I have even seen additional oil drain-backs added since the factory path is marginal.

Spending your money in revamping older engines should be an educated choice over upgrading to new. New runs great but with all these planned material shortages and purposeful destruction of our economy has me looking for spare parts to stockpile for my older engines before the EPA invents a new edict forcing all cars and truck built before 2000 be shredded..."for the children".

Good luck with either path chosen.

Very interested in seeing the outcome! Can you show the transmission and transfer case set up when you get it done? I’d like to see what modifications would need to be done underneath. My 77 F150 4x4 is itching to have this done to it.

Hey Solomon, that truck is such a sweet example of a stock truck. How come your going down this path and not a sweet rebuild of the 400? Some CHI or TFS alloy heads, nice cam etc... Will you be upgrading the brakes?
