2024 BMW X3 Review: The Sports Sedan of SUVs

BMW's X3 has long been a staple in the compact luxury SUV segment, and the 2024 model continues to impress with its blend of performance, practicality, and premium features. Starting at $47,895, the X3 offers a compelling package that stands out in a crowded field.

Driving Dynamics That Delight
The X3's driving experience is where it truly shines. Based on the legendary 3-series platform, this SUV handles more like a sports sedan than a high-riding crossover. The standard sDrive30i and xDrive30i models come equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower. While not blistering quick (0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds for the xDrive30i), it provides ample power for daily driving and highway passing.

For those craving more grunt, the M40i variant ups the ante with a silky-smooth 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, churning out a robust 382 horsepower. This powerplant rockets the X3 from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds – sports car territory in SUV form.

Both engines are mated to an excellent 8-speed automatic transmission that delivers seamless shifts and contributes to surprisingly good fuel economy. The xDrive30i achieves an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined, while the more powerful M40i isn't far behind at 23 mpg combined.

Premium Interior, With a Caveat
Step inside the X3, and you're greeted by a well-crafted interior that exudes quality. The dashboard layout is driver-focused and intuitive, with BMW's latest iDrive infotainment system taking center stage. A 10.3-inch touchscreen is standard, with a larger 12.3-inch display available as an option.

While material quality is high, some may find the overall design a touch conservative compared to more flamboyant rivals like the Genesis GV70. However, what the X3's cabin lacks in flash, it makes up for in functionality and comfort. The 10-way power-adjustable front seats offer excellent support, and rear passengers benefit from reclining seatbacks.
Cargo space is competitive for the class, with 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 62.7 cubic feet with them folded.

Tech and Safety
BMW has equipped the X3 with a solid array of standard safety features, including automated emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Adaptive cruise control is available as an option.
The iDrive infotainment system is feature-rich, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation as standard. A Wi-Fi hotspot is also included, though some may bemoan that many other tech features are relegated to the options list.

The Verdict
The 2024 BMW X3 continues to be a top contender in the compact luxury SUV segment. Its engaging driving dynamics, refined powertrains, and well-crafted interior make it a standout choice for those who want the practicality of an SUV without sacrificing the thrill of driving.
While some rivals may offer more dramatic styling or a lower entry price, the X3's balanced approach to luxury, performance, and utility is hard to beat. It's not just an SUV – it's a BMW through and through, and that makes all the difference for driving enthusiasts.
