A detailed review and demonstration of my topper hoist. This set up is a must for anyone that removes there topper more than once a year. It takes less than 6 minutes to remove my topper from start to finish with only one person.

Below is a list of some of the items I used to make the hoist along with their links:

1500 Lb. Capacity 120 Volt AC Electric Winch

5PCS Lifting Single Pulley Roller Loading 330Ibs, 304 Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Single Wheel Swivel Lifting Rope Pulley Block M25

Miami Cordage Nylon Double Braid Rope, Domestic

Samson Rope Splicing Kit (Fids 1/4-Inch, 1/2-Inch)

Check out my Pick Up Camper Here!

Here's a great video on how to splice double braided rope:

Just built mine today based on your design. Pretty much identical. Frickin sweet! Thanks for the idea!

2 years later... ARE recommends you don't lift by the outer edge alone. If you add 2x4 blocks on your cross brace to fit the part that sits on the bed it would eliminate warping or cracking the edge of the topper. Cool setup though.

If you really want to make it ultimate you could install rack tracks on top of the shell and hook to those. That would eliminate the 2x4s and having to crawl inside the camper shell to feed them accross. The racks are also great for camper top storage if needed.

Just did the same set up after my first cheaper option fell apart. Wish I would have done this the first go around and avoided the headache. Nice video man. 👊🏼

I've watched a several videos researching for my next topper lift. You have a very clean and effective design and a design that reduces loads (4 corners) and looks super clean. The spliced rope is very clean look. Looking forward to getting mine built next week. Had to make some adjustments bc that hoist you're using is now $170! so I'll be using an Amazon PA800 instead, which is under $100. My topper might stay in place longer so I think I will add some additional hooks for redundancy and add ratcheting straps to hold it in place when left longer than a weekend. Thanks for sharing your design!

Looks like a great design, I'm stealing it thank you. My travel on the lines will be 5'6" because my trusses are 12 feet high. The winch will have to be a little further away due to that but all I need now are some 7" U-bolts to mount the winch and a couple more eyebolts.

Yes that is a great idea for a quick and body harmless removal. Good job Justin

Those hooks swinging next to your nice truck paint gave me anxiety, lol. If it was me, I would lift them back up before driving under.

Awesome stuff here. I'm going to use bicycle hangers x 2 under my carport that has no access to electric and hook the undersides and lift them intermittently.

Awesome video, looking to do the same here. One question: What hooks did you use on your setup? Is the hook for the winch connector the same as the rest?

This sir is exactly what im looking for. Lol thank you.

I was looking at doing the same but have a question on the splicing. What method or video did you watch to splice. I bought the same rope I believe and I am struggling with getting it spliced.

@9NailzGarage how did you reinforce? I know you said that you couldn't show it because of blow in, but do you have any specs or diagrams?

It's called a truck cap. Probably limits peoples searches.

gotta know....does the grey rear entryway door in your garage hit the cap when opened? lol. Looked like it didn't clear. Nice set up - Clever

I am about to build the same setup, but i will not be able to reinforce the joist. I have a room over the garage and can not access the joist. They should be 2×10s at least since it has a second story.

Love the setup and need to do the same.

So how much rope was needed?

I may be going with cable for cost reasons unless I can’t find less expensive way to do the rope. Also unfortunately that winch is going for more like $129 now but they have other less expensive options.

so, where can one find the design / specs in terms of pulley layout and distance etc? I know I would have to scale it up as I have an 8' bed with cap on it but yours looks so well done, I didn't want to just eye ball it. Thank you

so you didn't use the mounting plate that comes with the winch? how did you mount it to the ceiling?
