Te Wairoa is a ghost town also known as the Buried Village. It is located near the shores of the majestic lake Tarawera in New Zealand's North Island. When Mt. Tarawera erupted on the 10th June in 1886, followed by the explosion of Lake Rotomahana, Te Wairoa disappeared under the thick cover of mud. Later on before the WWII, Dudley and Basil Smith and their parents bought the land from the previous owners and made an effort to recover the buried village.
Dudley and Basil both fought in WWII and the development of the land delayed. In 1943, Basil died in a plane crash in Sri Lanka. Dudley continued excavation when he returned to New Zealand.
In this village, the old artefacts, and the traces of life of village are there for you to see. The trail of Wairere Falls is also fascinating. Among the artefacts there is a bottle of wine that is 143 years old.
