-ePropulsion VS Torqeedo-
3HP ELECTRIC OUTBOARD SHOOTOUT

Welcome to the 3 horse power electric outboard shootout! Featuring the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus and the Torqeedo Travel 1103C.

In this video we take to the water and do a head to head top speed test comparing the two three horse power electric outboards. I test both electric outboards on my 1436 jon boat that has a fully built interior, on the same electric only lake, back to back. Same boat, same conditions, different outboards. I'll share the results with you.

I'll cover the retail cost of each unit, one of the biggest questions I get.

I do a full breakdown of the differences in battery size and full throttle runtime.

I also take a look at the two electric outboards installation process and share my experience. I'll demonstrate the installation process for you.

I'll take a look at the power connectors on the units, the standard battery charge time, the solar battery charge capabilities, external battery hook up capabilities, demonstrate the noise level produced by each unit, and much more!

I'll give my conclusion at the end.

Yes, I am a happy ePropulsion partner and outboard owner. There is a reason I chose to use ePropulsion, because of their innovation and willingness to work with the small boat community to push the envelope in technology and capabilities. I already knew the product they produce and the difference between them and their competitors. I did this video to show everyone else the differences I am already aware of. Which is why I use ePropulsion. Hope you enjoy.

I have a torqueedo, and wouldn’t mind if it dropped overboard. Totally agree about the connector, but I’ll add the shear pin breaks ALL. THE. TIME. And the delay in the throttle almost knocked my 7yo overboard into the prop once.

I bought the epropulsion awhile back for my 12ft inflatable that we took out to the Oregon coast bays for crabbing. Didn’t want to deal with gas and storage. Started initially with a Newport 55 trolling with a lithium ion battery- not enough power when dealing with outgoing tides. Got the epropulsion and no problems with overcoming the tides. Salt water hasn’t been an issue either. Love it.

I love my ePropulsion. However I think you skipped over one notable feature of the Torqeedo, which is that it has GPS that gives you speed and distance remaining, vs just time remaining. In practice, I think time remaining is good enough to gauge whether you can make it back to the ramp. Also, one feature of the ePropulsion that impressed me is that it will automatically burn off power from the battery down to 50% if it’s left charged for over 10 days. This helps preserve the lifetime of lithium batteries.

I owned a Spirit 1.0 PLUS last year. I'am verry happy with it and i think its better than the Torqueedo (altough i'm german). Unfortunately this video is obviously more of an advertisement than a real shootout.

You could have done better!

Great product. I upgraded from a 30lbs minn kota on my canoe and I am more than happy with the purchase. I have been using it all summer long and it hasn’t let me down once.

Agree in regards to connectors. My 5 year old Torqeedo’s controller connector is failing. I’ve already replaced the entire tiller once.

I own the Torqeedo Travel 1003C. I use it as the dinghy motor on my powerboat. I rarely use my dinghy. I like that the Torqeedo doesn't drip oil (outboard). I can store in inside the boat in a locker.
Nice video. Two comments. I'm not surprised at similar top speeds from similar e-outboards. Another explanation is hull speed. Both motors pushed the jon boat to hull speed. After that, a resistance wall comes up.
Secondly, my one Torqeedo complaint, as Anthony mentioned, is the goofy main connector. It's always difficult to thread.

A year ago I stopped watching this after hearing the price. A year later, I’m so glad I get to watch a comparison with a comparably set up Jon boat. Can’t get anymore useful than this!!

Great video. Can you perhaps do a video on the spirit remote and a compatible steering system for it? Also what other 48v batteries work for the spirit?

Have you encountered aquatic weeds with either of these motors, and how well did they do? Some of the best fishing is where there is pretty thick growth, so it is good to know if the motor just cut through them, or started to excessively vibrate or quite when fouled?

I bought a first-generation Torqeedo 10 years ago and used it for just two years before I gave it—literally GAVE it—away. It stranded me numerous times and went back to the US distributor three times for warranty repair. When the warranty expired I knew it was pointless to continue. I bought a noisy but totally reliable gasoline outboard and vowed to have nothing further to do with Torqeedo.

I'm cautiously impressed with what I've seen and heard about ePropulsion—and almost interested. But the cost remains an issue. I just can't understand why an electric outboard should cost twice as much as a comparable gasoline motor. When you bring the price down, I'll be interested.

I don't have either yet - but weight distribution is a consideration on how my tiny sailboat sails. From what I can find the ePro weighs a good deal more. 42.6 vs 33 lb, yeah? I'd take the extra weight for the benefits you outline, but only mentioning the positives of the brand you have plastered on your boat as a sponsor makes your otherwise excellent review feel like a commercial.

Great video Anthony thanks for sharing as I'm currently setting up a 100% electric 4m bass boat now. Some great points highlighted indeed. Wow 40% more battery runtime at $500US les is a no brainer for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Personally I like the fact that the Torqeedo splits down further and I don't have any trouble with the battery connector and I've never lost a locating pin. However if the Torqeedo didn't exist I'd go Epropulsion before ever going back to petrol

Thanks that was great, just returned from a holiday where by outbound on my dingy was constantly giving me trouble and decided to get electric one to replace me 5hp Yamaha. The spirit it is..
