Even ford themselves have mistaken the rs has the same motor as the mustang 😂

Ford technician here, Functionally the same engine. Some minor differences to allow it to be mounted longitudinal instead of laterally and other minor changes to ancillaries but overall it’s the same 2.3 Ecoboost

Nice to see you doing videos for Doug.
Matt needs to give you a raise.

Ford engineer here....this engine is based on the mazda MZR format. We did a lot of cost cutting with the ford format. Overall the Mazda block is stronger, capable of more power. You can get way more power out of a mazda 3 with the 2.5 if you take the time and money to add bolt ons and pro tune.

To expand on this some:
The "recall" was not an actual recall. It was voluntary and only valid for a limited time. Most recalls are forced by the NHTSA and basically permanent. Also, the real difference between blocks is the compression ratio. The RS's is higher, which is why it makes more power and needs a stronger gasket than the mustang. Also, this mistake was only made from mid-2016 through mid-2017 production years. Preordered 2016's and late 2017's mostly were not affected and no 2018's (like the one here) were affected.

This happened to my 2017 RS that I got new. By 6k miles I had gone through two head gaskets and heads. The last time it sounded like ball bearing bouncing around inside my engine.

The parts are interchangeable. Yes they differ a little bit. Ones built for rwd the other for fwd/awd. Yes you slap rs rods and pistons in a ecoboost and Vice versa. They’re the same but different for their own respective platform.

Ford even left the fwd mounts on the mustangs engine

Very informative. Thanks. You sound like Ed Norton

Its likely the only difference between the blocks is what makes them mountable longitudinally vs transverse. Pretty much the same motor, so yes, you do have the focus motor in your mustang lol

It's the same as the Mustang Performance edition of the 2.3

It can be confusing. The 3.5 L Duratec in the F-150 is not the same engine as the 3.5 L Duratec in the Explorer. Basically, there is a FWD and a RWD version of this motor with some major design differences between them.

I heard the mustang ecoboost is the same engine as a mazdaspeed 3 for testing I guess, 2.3 turbo. Ford also owned mazda at the time giving mazda the ford ranger chassis and others to make cars with

SUPER interesting!!!

I like these cars but the engine issues early on dashed those desires quickly

Same identical engine . bare block to bare block same.... Even the timing cover for the mustang still has the fwd mounting spots

The high performance package of the mustang ecoboost from 2020 to 2023 came with the focus rs engine they were built in Valencia Spain and run on 5w-50 engine oil. The base ecoboost is still similar in the design of the block but the hpp is practically identical to the RS motor
