The Weardale Fairies

Here is yet another example of the fairies' dislike of being spied upon, and the vindictiveness with which they will be revenged.
It is also another example of the countryman's determination to help himself in the face of adversity. In this story he is rewarded, too, for offering help to others in trouble, in spite of his own distress.

A riddle.... I instantly knew the egg & lizard tail answers: being an observer & lover of nature. Now the glow worm bit did stump me: but seeing as how they are currently only found in New Zealand, Australia, and Dismals Canyon Alabama...they are simply beyond my ken.
So I'm left wondering: were they once common in other locations? And/or where did this tale originate?
