Sennheiser HD 820 Review - Closed-back HD 800S, but at what cost?

I love mine - a lot! But the seal is an issue - with the perfect seal they sound wonderful. I also realized that the earpads need to "warm up" with my body heat and then eventually seal very well. If there is one thing Sennheiser needs to do is fix the earpads, there MUST be a way to create a better seal right away.

I had the same socket issue with my HD800s. It broke before I even got a chance to listen to them. There's no reason for a proprietary connector, but if one is made then it should be better than common options.

I've been thinking, since most people who use the HD8** variants EQ their headphones anyways, wouldn't the wonky tuning of the HD820 kinda less relevant for those who like EQing their headphones? The HD800/800S take EQ like a champ so I would imagine the HD820 to be EQ'd rather easily as well.

The glass enclosure is visually striking and looks quite beautiful when clean. But does it stay that way? Seems like it would be a fingerprint magnet! Hoping you can comment about this. Also, thanks for pointing out the problem with the cable sockets. Seems like a showstopper for anyone who would want to do any cable swapping.

What dac/amp did you use to demo these? I didn’t like them all too much until I paired it with the hdv820 or tube amps. I tried it first off a chord Dave and really disliked it.

You can really see how bummed out he is to have to do a review on the hd820.
If these had wooden cups and were artsy and popular his face would light up and he’d gloss over all the negatives like he does in other videos.
….but these are the HD820’s. They don’t deserve to be compared to other closedbacks ( and rarely are). They instead are only compared to arguably one of the best open backs ever, 800s.
He even says they are the biggest soundstage of any closed back there is….but they still aren’t open like the open back 800s so who cares.
I guarantee Sennheiser never saw this happening in the community. That they would create a closed back so great that it could actually be compared in some ways to its brothers…..only to be discarded by everyone because it’s a closed back.

I feel like this channel is discriminating against electrostatic headphones.

Rather a review based on another top closed back rather than the 800S. Had these for 2 years now and noticed that amplifier matching with high output was a huge remedy when compared to your typical $500 amp

Beyerdynamics T5 3 is cheaper and better from my audition experience, also much easier to drive on portable device.
