How Can the Coronavirus Impact China’s Economy?

Jan.27 -- John Quelch, dean at University of Miami Herbert Business School, examines the potential economic impact the spread of the coronavirus could have on China’s economy. He speaks with Bloomberg’s David Westin on “Balance of Power.”

The interviewee is unaware of the key hidden events at the onset of the viral crisis. (1) in Oct 2019 lab in Wuhan identified a, new coronavirus from local CDC/hospital sample originated from a dead 80-year old. (2) Beijing demanded a full lab report including viral DNA sequence which was submitted near end of Nov. (3) Central CDC sent its own team to repeat investigation in Dec. (4) First patients sought treatments in Wuhan hospitals in Dec. (5) Beijing insisted new virus as not transmittable between human to play down on crisis. 8 hospital staff leaked lab full report outside China and were arrested for 'incorrectly' making reference to SARS. (6) Beijing reluctantly announced that new virus may pass from human to human in Jan 2020 when the number of cases soared up in Wuhan. (7) Decision to lock down Wuhan came too late after 5 millions already left Wuhan for the Chinese New Year vacation.

The speaker in this interview praised China for its quick actions including publication of new viral DNA sequence. Locking down Wuhan in late Jan 2020 despite the first internal report of the new virus in Oct 2019 is anything but a good example of politics being an obstacle to public health within China escalating to a global health emergency. Does anyone still want to praise Beijing as WHO have had been doing so since the onset of this political bungling causing fallout on other countries? Major state-managed effort is still at work today to play down the numbers of cases & deaths by restricting the distribution of new viral test kits. Sick patients and those died without official test kit certifications are excluded from the official figures submitted to WHO. If the accumulated deaths since Jan 2020 is as low as 200+, can anyone explain why the Wuhan incinerators are in use day and night? Perhaps, there have been many more bodies certified as death from common pneumonia than the 200+ confirmed deaths from the new virus. It must be easier to control the published numbers of confirmed cases & deaths than contolling the spread of the new virus. The virus is not subjected to any political influence, political idealogy but the politics & regime have absolute control over the numbers.

Wuhan Institute of Virology has existed since 1956 and already hosted BSL3 laboratories. A BSL4 facility was completed in 2015, and became the first, only and visible BSL-4 laboratory in China. SARS coronavirus, MERS coronavirus, among other deadly viruses are there.
