HI Mike. Re Insulation.
I am a retired Vice President of Rockwool North America, and do have good knowledge of various insulations, including foam. Here are my thoughts, and I am trying to not have prejudice.
1) Foam -- I like your decision here. One thing. to consider is educate yourself on the ambient temperature information for application. That information should be found on their MDSH tech sheets.
2) Fiberous insulation. I recommend your familiarize yourself with Fire and Sound properties. You are having a shop on one end, so you may want to use Rockwool if only on the wall separating the shop from the game room. You will notice a significant improvement on the sound transmission between the work area and the balance of the building if that is of interest to you.
3) May you never have a need for this information, but here it is: Fire properties of Rockwool are superior. You may have some woodturning and you may have combustibles in your shop. Rockwool has proven benefits in fire compartmental separation. Obviously your choice on these benefits - but certainly something you would be wise to educate yourself on.
Best wishes on this project. Regards Dennis

I build and renovate schools for a living, was a contractor before that. The foam vs. everything else debate has gone on forever. I love the spray foam, , fantastic product, seals up the envelope like nothing else. If cost is no object - and it never is - I would go with foam. But...you're using conventional insulation in ceiling - where a great deal of your heat escapes. I'd say if you were foaming the ceiling, even with a couple of inches (with loose on top), then foam the walls too. That being said, I'd go with fiberglass in the walls, rockwool is a good product too. I think it takes a very long time to get your money back with foam, especially if you're heating, at least partially, with a free fuel like wood. Technically still need some air for the wood stove unless is draws from outside as many do. Good luck! Great channel! Hope Eva is doing well.

Mike, I just want to express my appreciation for the way You avoid all things that cause division. (Ie: sticker) I am extremely appreciative of the values You demonstrate regularly on your channel: hard work; honesty; Your handshake is still Your word; callous on Your hands show just how truly honest You are; helping Your Neighbors; Family support You give; appreciation of other People's hard work and honesty; Your pure honest grit to get stuff done. I am loyal to You and Your channel because of these values You continue to show and remind all of Us that decency and truths still exist. Thank You Sir

Good morning! You’re going to be within a stone’s throw of our younger son in Hershey PA. If I can shed this ‘cold’, maybe we could make a visit to them and swing over to Mount Joy. It’s only 15 miles or so. Haven’t been up there since August, and while they’ve been down here for Thanksgiving and Christmas, we’ve not seen their older pooch since August and not met the newly arrived pooch at all. And I’ve learned there is a huge model railroading museum over in Bethlehem a little farther east. Racking up a lot of reasons to visit!!

Installing air intake on your wood stove is a good idea regardless. Your woodstove always will vent the hot exhaust air out through the chimney. That means new, cold air will have to come from the outside to the stove. That means draft and you exhaust already heated air. With an air intake, you deliver that air directly to your stove and you do not lose the heated air in your shop/playroom.
I would still go with the spray foam. even a tiny gap between glasfiber or other insulation will give room for condensation which can cause mold problems.

Saw one of those hidden stickers just the other day when filling up.
Messicka is a pretty big outfit, I enjoy watching Neils videos.

Hi Mike, I sprayed a lot of urethane back in the eighties and to me, the sealing properties are just as important as it's R value. I would consider spraying an inch or two to seal all that metal siding and you can add fiberglass if needed. As for as being too tight, I think you'll find that all those garage doors will give you all the fresh air you need.

Mike, This is Russ from Missouri, we met briefly at to Paul Bunyan show last October. In 2015 I built my shop. Its 50X64X12 with a 24X60X16 rv barn attached. I used open cell spray foam. we put 5" in the ceiling and 3" in the walls. I had this sprayed directly on the metal roofing and covered the walls with tyvac before spraying. My installer doesn't cover the roof due to much better adhesion to the horizontal metal. I understand this voids the metal roof warranty. I have a wood furnace. no outside air intake. the cost for the shop and the rv barn was 8800.00 I couldn't be happier! Without heat and 0F it has never fell below 38Fand in the summer Its always 10-15 degrees cooler than outside. I compared it to my friends building and it seems to add a lot of structural integrity to the building . I'm sure you will be fine with glass insulation, but foam is better IMHO Russ Ps I wish we could have spent more time together

I have been in construction (Electrician) my entire adult life and I can tell you there is no comparison between fiberglass insulation and spray foam. I sub contracted for a contractor that only used spray foam insulation and the buildings were night and day as far as warmth and comfort are concerned. With radiant heat like you have I promise you will be very happy with spray foam if you decide to go that way. I had fiberglass insulation in my own house for many years and the house was never just right. After seeing spray foam on several jobs i ripped out all the sheetrock in my house had spray foam installed. I put all new sheetrock up. I can tell you it was a lot of work but very glad I did it. My heating bills went down considerably after doing it and the house is much more comfortable . Hope this helps in some way. Good luck with whatever you guys decide to do.

I’ve become a big fan of Rock Wool insulation, so much nicer to work with compared to fiberglass insulation. Holds its shape, cuts with a serrated knife. Someone else pointed out that it’s virtually fireproof. I’m with you regarding standard fiberglass insulation projects, I won’t do then anymore. I would tackle them with Rock Wool though. Just my opinion. The snow will help some of our local area ski resorts here in the Catskills. A lot of folks count on it for income, so the snow is good for the economy this time of year. Stay well.

Property looks great. Nice and clean around the building.

Ever think about putting a swimming pool out there 😉

Hey Mike I have a metal sided building like yours. We chose to go with sprayfoam. With fiberglass insulation you have to worry about condensation forming and possible mold . I would recommend talking to local contractors that is familiar with metal sided building and see what they recommend

Spray foam makes your building structurally stronger & a separate air supply to your wood stove keeps more heat in the building

Hi Mike, I had my outbuilding foam insulated in the walls and it is very tight and wind proof and animal/ insect proof. I would definitely do it again, love the sound deadening effect as well. Good luck on your choice. John
