Starfield Versus Baldur's Gate 3 - A Conversation on RPGs

I've got some thoughts about Starfield after having been going all-in with the Baldur's Gate 3 early access pre-launch craze the past couple of weeks. Specifically why I think the gaming industry needs a good space RPG, and the differences between Starfield and BG3, and why I love those differences.

I'm looking forward to maining both, for obvious reasons. The friends and fun I've found in the modding community for BGS games are Legos for my soul. I suspect BG3s modding /DM tools will also be strong. WIN/WIN.

I actually haven’t felt this happy for RPGs since the time of Skyrim actually coming out in 11-11-11

I’ll be playing starfield and BG3 until summer 2024 at the least. I spent 323 hours in pillars of eternity 2. I just stopped playing Skyrim in 2022. So I know these games will occupy me for at least a year.

Will definitely be playing both. I feel Starfield might be a contender for game of the year even if BG3 deserves the same attention.

From me though they'll both be getting the same attention.

I think both games are labour of love and that's why they'll both be amazing.

I like the looks of Starfield but...I'm old and slow and arthritic. Fast-paced FPS game elements are not for me, and I don't know enough about the game to know if the FPS parts can be avoided. BG3, on the other hand, is perfect for me, and I have very fond memories of BG1 and 2.

I’m playing Starfield day 1, Baulders gate can wait until Christmas time. I’ll play both for sure. Thus is because Starfield is a new IP and in a new location to most recent games.

They are two completely different games. They are going to give two completely different experiences. The ONLY similarity is the fact that they are RPG's

Lol I remember in 2011 while in college watching someone walk out of GameStop with the collector’s edition for Skyrim; they were so hyped. Since graduating college I’ve tried to get collectors editions of games I’m super hyped about. I got BG3 and Starfield collector’s edition. I hope you get a chance to eventually buy starfield. I live in a rural area too so I know how crazy things can get when the electricity goes out.

True that we haven’t had hands on with Starfield. I like fantasy too, but sci-fi can be super cool. I’m interested to see if I actually play any of Starfield and BG3. I see watching you play it in my future, regardless if I do. BG3 is attractive because of how awesome it looks but because it’s Forgotten Realms, Starfield because of what you say here.

I can see myself sinking a lot of time into both of these games.

Starfield is trying to do things that have never been done before and nobody else can do whereas baldursgate3 is taking a known quantity AKA Dungeons & Dragons based cRPGs and cranking the scale and complexity up to a level never seen before. Personally I'm more excited for Starfield simply because there is nothing even remotely close to being like it.

I going into both with very different "wants" i'm going to to BG3 with the want of having a extremely reactive and choice based RPG, where i can truly roleplay my character. I'm going in to starfield with the want of exploring a cool galaxy with alot less roleplay but a heavier focus on combat, These 2 games fill different roles for me entirely, but in terms of what i enjoy more, i've wanted a true RPG for a very long time, and BG3 seems to be closest we've ever gotten

I guarantee you it would have affected the sales of Baldur's Gate 3 is the PC version was not pushed up. For us hardcore gamers we can obviously see the difference but for the casual gamer they just see 2 RPGs and many of them would probably only buy 1 of them.

I have faith in BG3. Even though I have pre ordered starfield, I am skeptical given the history of AAA games

The next few months are going to be fantastic. I’ll have a month of BG3 before Starfield, then Cyberpunk 2.0 comes out along with Phantom Liberty. I’m not going to have a life for a while lol

I enjoy your content and have seen your channel grow... congrats on hitting 10k. In my opinion as gamers yes we don't need 5 days early access, but as a streamer those 5 days early access is meaningful for channel growth. I know you'll do you and don't necessarily follow the norms of other streamers, which is part of what I like about your channel, but hey that's my opinion about the 5 days early access.

Man, really interesting seeing a older gamer and rpg fan. It must be really interesting to experience the evoltuion of gaming in these years.

For me, Starfield is my focus. Say wahatever you want avout bethesda RPG, but they truly feel like a "real world that you play a role in" even in Skyrim that there is not a lot of choices in comparasion.

Bg3 will be amazing I am sure of it, but at the end of the day I can play a lot of other CRPGs out there (solasta, pathdinder, torment, shadowrun etc)

Bethesda RPGs? The closest that I can think of is maybe Kingdom Come Deliverance, MAYBE.

Their games are so unique, so special that I can overlook some bugs. Sadly people will be terrible with it if it has any bug or different mechanic.

For exaple, I am sure that people will find the procedural generation a problem, but I think that it is the natural evolution for bethesda, they did daggerfall back in the day and while it was also buggy daggerfall unity showed the potential it had for RP.

Also, I get that people ate scary about fallout 76, but it was a special project that Zenimax made them do. Every zenimax studio actually had to do that. Wolfstein young blood and redfall were both projects from that era.

And more than thar bethesda did realese bad games in the bast, redguard and batllespire...then you know what came next???

I swore after fallout 4 to not trust bethesda again when it comes to making an rpg. Ill wait for you guys to play it a few weeks and see what they did with SF. But im going in without big expectations for it. BG3 however feels like a gift from above.
