The Booktube Top Tens Tag

I am honored to have been asked to create this tag video by Jason, who originated it:

As I mention in the beginning- I am not big on ranking my reading. When I rate books, I reserve a 5 star rating for a book that enchanted me so much that I would want to read it again. It doesn’t mean it’s the best book in the world, but that it spoke to me in a way that made me sad to end it and just thinking of them makes me emotional, in one way or another. So I approached this tag with the task of identifying and articulating the books that have moved me the most (as of this moment of reflection).

Books mentioned:
[01:44]10. Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit
[03.28] 9. Dune by Frank Herbert
[05:40] 8. Milkman by Anna Burns
[06:32] 7. The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner
[08:22] 6. You Can’t Win by Jack Black
[10:00] 5. Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf
[11:30] 4. A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara
[15:16] 3. An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alamedine
[17:15] 2. Just Kids by Patti Smith
[18:45] 1. 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff

Hi, I’ve just found your channel and I so enjoyed listening to your top ten books. I also love books and 84 Charing Cross Road has been a long standing favourite of mine. What a great idea to start your year with a favourite book. I will steal it shamelessly. Thanks for an interesting video. 😊💕🌷

This was so good! It's nice to see someone else make a really long version of this tag, like I did. You outdid me, even. It was so great. When I saw Dune on the list I was going to tell you about how amazing the Folio edition is ... and then you picked it up LOL. Loved seeing A Little Life on there, as well :)

Went through a lot of booktube videos while doing the dishes and this video was truly captivating. Love channels like this where the passion for books comes through. And ending with a mention for 84 Charing Cross Road!😱 Now I have to get it.

The flamethrower, Our Souls At Night and An Unnecessary Woman are all on my shelf and I've been meaning to get to the latter for years, thanks for the nudge Sarah. I also loved how you spoke about A Little Life and how even though you loved it you couldn't reread it.

Great video! It was wonderful to hear you talk so eloquently about why these books mean so much to you. I agree with a lot of your thoughts on A Little Life; not one I can see myself going back to, but I'm very glad to have read it. You've reminded me of a couple I've been meaning to pick up for a while too - An Unnecessary Woman and Our Souls at Night.

What a great list. I don't think anyone explained their list better. I need to read _Our Souls At Night_ . I enjoyed _Just Kids_ as well.

I so agree with you about 84, Charing Cross Road. I once saw the movie and loved it, but I did not realise it was a book adaptation. I read it for the first time a 2 years ago and it is so beautiful. It made me laugh and cry. It is just lovely.
And since we share a favourite, I just subscribed to your channel. ;)

Thanks for this! You’ve almost convinced me to give Milkman another try. I tried to read it when it first came out, but really struggled with it. I have both Our Souls at Night and 84 Charing Cross Rd. on my shelves and really must read them. I’m afraid I am going to pass on A Little Life.

Oh, my! I needed something to cure my “book hangover” and so chose to reread 84, Charing Cross Road today! This must be my tenth reading of it. Now I’ve segued to her Q’s Legacy and will end with the Duchess of Bloomsbury. My first reading of those two. Much sniffling today as I’ve relived and contemplated those lovely relationships.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I so appreciate your thoughts on A Little Life and wholeheartedly agree. And so nice to see some love for An Unnecessary Woman. It's one of my favourites but I haven't met anyone who have read it. I haven't read 84 Charing Cross Rd. (saw the movie many years ago) but I've recently bought it as per your recommendation. Thinking of saving it to read around Christmas :)

Our Souls at Night, such a beautiful book! Loved Just Kids... love Patti Smith! I always enjoy her posts on Instagram. A Little Life has been sitting on my shelf for quite some time, I've been waiting for the right time to read it.

That's a coincidence, I've just started An Unnecessary Woman and I'm already loving it. It takes place in Lebanon.

Our Souls at Night is exquisite. It's one of those books that ripped me apart. (I also relate to your feelings about A Little Life. Loved it but am hesitant to read it again.)

Of you loved the Bene Gesserit in Dune, you'll adore the warrior nuns/witches in Mark Lawrence's Red Sister (and its two sequels). I know it looks different from what you usually read, but I really think you'd love it. :-)

I loved A Little Life, it was a very heartbreaking experience but one still carries on reading. It still lingers in my thoughts
