Spruce 🆚 Douglas Fir 🆚 Fir

I'm a tree nerd and tree identification is something that a lot of foragers don't put enough effort into learning! There are a ton of great edible trees, and lots of tasty mushrooms that are associated with specific trees. Learn them and become a better forager!

I remember the family going out in the 50’s up the mountain and getting a Douglas fir for a Christmas tree. The scent of thise needles and very sticky sap from those bumpy blisters on that tree trunk are still memorable. Like red delicious apples and carnations, the true scent has been eliminated for uniformity, size and longevity.

Excellent work. So concise and clear. Thank you. As a carpenter with a predeliction for Douglas fir due to uts durability I felt duty bound to learn what they looked like when living.

The cones are edible or the needles are edible? 🤔

When you say ‘they are all edible’, do you mean the needles to make tea? Or can you actually eat any parts of them?
