During the interview of chapter 1031 release, Oda sensei clarified that zoro although he is no. 2 but he is not the vice captain. (You can fact check this)

There's no "only choice" for vice captain because they all bring something to the table. That's the point. Most of the examples given for the others are things Zoro can't do most of the time. Which, again, is the point.
(also the whole Zoro didn't leave the crew is the stupidest argument ever. Zoro being lucky to not have the kind of trauma and past that leads to him leaving is not the argument people think it is)
