CA DMV Public Workshop on Autonomous Vehicle Regulations

CA DMV will hold a public workshop on the development of regulations related to the operation of autonomous vehicles.

The workshop is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

This public workshop will provide the public an opportunity to help improve the quality of the regulations that will eventually be adopted for operation of self--driving or autonomous vehicles on California's public roadways.

The upcoming public workshop will address key questions related to the requirements that would be necessary to operate a self--driving or autonomous vehicle. Other relevant topics that will be covered include whether autonomous vehicles will be operated without a driver, operator knowledge and skills, safety standards, evidence of insurance or bond, and vehicle registration requirements.

The DMV previously held two public workshops and a public hearing on the testing regulations of autonomous vehicles. This upcoming workshop is being held in response to the passage of SB 1298 (Vehicle Code §38750) which requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to adopt regulations in order to test and to operate autonomous vehicles.
