I'm Hispanic and thank god for Martin Luther king. He wasn't fighting for just blacks vote. He was fighting for ALL to vote.

Hi, I'm a student from Germany and I'm trying to understand all of this for one of my American Studies classes. Your video really helped, you have an engaging way to explain things! Thank you!

They needed to pass a law to enforce the law that they passed.

The law is severely weakened but not dead. There were a ton of voter id laws that were struck down because of Section 2 in the past week.

No, don't do that. He was being figurative! LOL
Keep up the good work, Keith!

Your videos are great! I have learned much from watching them. Being from South Carolina, as a child I can remember the turmoil during the 1960s. The violence and the riots were on TV. I didn’t understand at the time.

its so upsetting that, last year especially, we're essentially going backwards in history

I wonder how many people realize that in the Outer South (Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia), and in some other areas, pre-Voting Rights Act state governments had essentially no control over whether blacks and other minorities could register and vote or not.
Rather, this was under the control of county government authorities, whose decisions could not (at least practically) be challenged, and varied from county to county across the same state. The result was that in the Outer South between 1948 and 1964 black voter registration grew steadily and consistently over each state as a whole, but in some counties remained nil or nearly so even as of the 1964 election. Although North Florida, Tennessee and Arkansas were entirely exempt from the VRA, there were still areas where no blacks could vote due to intimidation at least in rural West Tennessee and the Florida Panhandle.

I have found your video's to be both informative and current on issues important to me as a student, however, I have already experienced the pain of section four having not been updated! And unless that flaw is corrected and updated The whole issue could mushroom into a catalyst for future discriminations against people from all walks of life! Keep up the good work!

Keith! What am I going to do without Jon Stewart?!?!? On a serious note, he was an absolute comedy genius!

I listened to this several times, so how do they still jerry meander if part 2 is still in place. I have been listening to all these hearings. They are still doing it & getting away with it

This is 5 years old, did 2 go away since this video?

(I was joking about what you said around 2:20 or so if it were taken out of context. I knew what you meant.) ;)
