KB 2091961 How to backup and restore the embedded vCenter Server 6.0 vPostgres database

In this video describes how to backup and restore the embedded vCenter Server Appliance vPostgres database.

Note: This video is only supported for backup and restore of the vPostgres database to the same vCenter Server. Use of image-based backup and restore is the only solution supported for performing a full, secondary appliance restore.

Backup and restore the embedded vPostgres database as a part of your regular vCenter Server Appliance database administration.

1. To start the backup process, first log in to the vCenter Server Appliance Linux console as root user, in this case we are using Putty SSH session.
2. Run the following command to enable access to the Bash shell.
3. Run “shell” command to enter the bash shell mode.
4. Next, create a folder for the backup files to be stored by running the following command.
5. Make sure that the newly created folder has the permissions for read, write and execute functions.
7. To connect to the vCenter Server Appliance with WinSCP.
8. Enter the IP address for the vCenter Server Appliance along with the credentials for the root user.
9. Click on the advanced button and choose SFTP.
10. Enter the value in the SFTP server field.
11. Click “ok”.
12. Click “Login” to proceed.
13. Click on “continue”.
14. We are now connected to the vCenter Server Appliance.
15. The left section is for the local files and the right section is for the vCenter Server Appliance files.
16. Locate the downloaded script file and copy to the newly created folder on vCenter Server Appliance.
17. Run the following command to extract the script files from the archive.
18. The script files do not have Execute permissions.
19. Run the following command to make the script files executable.
20. The script files are now executable.
21. Next, run the following command to make a backup of the vCenter Server Appliance vPotsgres database.
22. Backup process is now complete.
23. Finally transfer the created backup file to a desired location using WinSCP.
24. To restore the vCenter Server Appliance vPostgres database.
25. As a pre-requisite ensure the backed up file is available in the vCenter Server Appliance.
26. Log in to the vCenter Server Appliance Linux console as a root user, in this case we are using Putty SSH session.
27. Make sure the scripts from the knowledge base article are downloaded and transferred to the new folder created earlier.
28. Ensure the scripts have “execute” permission.
29. Next, stop the following services by running these commands.
30. Next, restore the database using the following command.
31. Duration of this process has been shortened for video purposes.
32. The restore process is now complete.
33. Finally, restart the following services by running these commands.
