Capillary Exchange of Nutrients and Waste Products:
Capillaries deliver nutrients and collect waste products from the interstitium. This process mainly happens by diffusion. For water and water-soluble substances, the main pathway is intercellular clefts. Lipid-soluble substances can cross the capillary wall from anywhere. The permeability depends on their molecular size and type of capillary. In interstitial gel, the fluid diffuses rather than flowing.
