I swear to God, the end of a safety wire pigtail is sharper than any blade known to man.

This may save someone’s life. Thank you for teaching me this. I don’t work on air planes but this could keep some of the equipment I do work with from coming apart and hurting someone. I am genuinely thankful for the information

Brought back memories. I've done this many times during my career as an A/C mechanic. Good job!

Nice! But doing that shit in a cramped space with barely any room to stick your fingers in there, I be cussing the whole time 😂😂😂

Finally someone on the internet who actually knows how it’s done. Good shit dude.

Do all that through an access panel thats 1/16 of an inch bigger than your hand and 4" to the left of the hole with a flashlight and a mirror. I worked on E2C's and my theory is that GRUMMAN skinned the whole aircraft and made access panels from memory to all the components.

On the F-16, lockwire was routinely used for securing critical fasteners, but this safety-wiring technique has largely been replaced by more advanced locking mechanisms on modern fighter aircraft.

As a 20-year AF vet with more years on the F-4 than I can remember, along with being assigned to CLSS as a member that repaired and flew on crash damaged KC and RC-135s I can definitely relate.

Good job! Was working my way to get my A&P but found more money and less stress working on Semi trucks

When I first got into Naval Aviation, we had to safety wire by hand because we weren't allowed to use safety wire pliers. They said that we made the twists too tight and prone to breaking.

I learned this as an Apprentice Ordnance Equipment Mechanic while a civilian Navy employee in the 1970's. Lockwiring many concentric rings of bolts on large gearboxes takes skill and a lot of patience.

If you’re gonna be an aircraft maintainer then I highly suggest making your own board of bolts that you can practice safety wire on. When I was in the navy I would have my juniors practice for hours until they were perfect. The most dangerous accidents in aviation are just one bad safety wire job away from happening.

That takes me back a few years, it's really simple but some people struggle with which way the wire goes.

I don't think I ever measure the twists to make sure that it was per standards, just eyeballed it, looks too lose add a few more twists, looks to tight cut it off and try again.

From the UK for the RAF

Worked on helicopters for 8 years in the military and I had to get real good at safety wiring and applying bandages to my fingers.

We use this technique in the pipeline inspection industry as well, to prevent bolts from backing out due to vibration etc

I used to really enjoy lockwiring when I was in the RAAF.
I had a booster pack w 8 bolts. It was a real challenge and very satisfying when done right.

first video ive seen online of someone actually doing it good

Now do it through a kidney panel, unable to see where the bolt is, with just enough space for one arm, only for it to be snipped by the person doing an independent inspection! (Absolutely beautiful locking wire though!!) 👍👌

Worked as an Aviation Boatswainmate Equipment-ABE onboard Aircraft Carriers, we used these methods to secure bolts throughout the Arresting Gear and Catapult equipment. Brings back memories.

properly done with the orientation of the tying done with the rotation of the bolts correctly. nice work
