Neo-Impressionism emerged in France in the late 19th century as a reaction against the empirical realism of Impressionism, relying instead on systematic calculation and scientific theory to achieve predetermined visual effects. Artists such as Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, and Vincent van Gogh developed new approaches to line, color, and form, paving the way for what would later be referred to as Post-Impressionism. Seurat, in particular, valued color intensity and developed his own style of painting, which he called Chromoluminarism.
