4 months later there is an almost $100 USD difference, so the card makes sense now.

Production cost for the newer generation GPUs is most likely cheaper than previous generations because of the chiplet design which wastes a lot less silicon when there is a defect. So even if the perfomance did not really increase for the mid tier, the main reason for their existence is to make AMD more money compared to selling last gen GPUs with monolithic dies.

Newegg throws in Starfield so to me I paid $400 for the card. Bought and happy with it. Upgraded from a 5700 XT.

Would it be worth it to upgrade it from a rtx 2060 super in 2024?

I just want to say that your performance review is great. I was reading a benchmark review for Starfield and all they did was talk about how both nividia and AMD’s top cards were barely playable frame rates.

Guess that’s the long way of saying “thanks for doing good journalism”.

The price does get wilder in Europe. Here, in the Czech Republic, the Sapphire PULSE version costs 12, 237 CZK (537 USD) while the 7800xt Sapphire PULSE costs 13, 965 CZK (612 USD), making the difference 75 USD, which is already looking much better. If you're asking why the price is so high compared to America: Tax is included (21% VAT) and the cost of shipping it here and the customs at the border etc. that the shop had to pay to get the card here and sell it also bumps the prices up.

I live in Canada and it is a $149 difference so it contradicts what you said at the beginning

it's so refreshing to hear you critique cards that deserve it, you changed for good

$50 more??. It cost me $200-$330 more for a 7800 in Australia. Not sure what this guy is on about

If this card were even $50 less expensive it might make more sense, but at only $50 in difference then yeah...of course, the fact that the 7800xt should really be the 7800 (non-xt) would also make this price make a bit more sense, but I have a feeling the marketing team said "people associate the xt with higher end, so, if we're only putting out one model of 7800, we really should call it the 7800xt!"

So, in the UK at least, 7700XT is £430, 7800XT is at least £490 (for the cheapest of either). So, a 14% price increase for roughly (based on average ratios of minimum and average frame rates for both) 15% performance difference at 1440p. So yes, if you're at 4K it makes a bigger difference, but at 1080p or 1440p it's just a budgetary question really.

I picked up this exact model 7700 XT for two reasons; It checked all the boxes for me (VRAM, TFLOPS, aesthetics, etc.) and... Amazon Prime allows you to pay over 12 months. 😅 So yes, it's overpriced (even with the included Starfield Premium that I really wanted), but for essentially $40 USD per month it fits nicely into my budget and it's a great upgrade from my old 5600 XT. The only reason I didn't spend more to get the 7800 XT was the Hellhound edition simply wasn't available on Amazon at the time. Also, I plan to under-volt and make it as quiet as possible, so there's that.

Hope that provides some insight into the thought process of someone who purchased this one. Thanks for the great review, as always!

Hey, writing from Russia. So, to explain the the situation: for me right now 50 pounds would kinda be a big deal, seeing as the economy is down the shitter (I guess I don't have to explain that invading neighboring countries isn't good for it, especially when your country is no more than a giant gas station). Most people here who buy such GPUs usually either save for a long time or take loans and pay them off for half a year. Most Russian millennials and gen Z struggle to pay rent right now. It's pretty much the same for other countries with fucked up economy like, say, Mexico. Young people there want to have good things in life, but getting them takes a lot of time and effort, so saving a little even on big purchases is always preferred, cause those 50 pounds usually mean 2 weeks of eating decent food (rather than resorting to instant noodles) and being able to pay for public transport.

Just got a new 6700XT, its 150 USD cheaper then the 7700XT
He's more then enough, and I don't need anything stronger
And he's still a better value

1 Year later here, i was able to pick this up for 315 as an upgrade from a 4060 8gb. The extra vram and performance makes sense after selling what i had to cover most of the difference.

Chezstar_

It’s essentially a 12gb version of a 6800.
