We are an Episcopal multi-generational faith community located in Lake Forest, IL that invites, welcomes, and nurtures individuals to deepen their relationship with God through worship, spiritual exploration, and service to others.
Hymn 593, “Lord, make us servants of your peace.” The text is from
St. Francis, of Assisi paraphrases by James Quinn. Though Assisi was
never ordained to the Catholic priesthood, Francis is one of the most
venerated religious figures in history. He is known as the patron saint of
animals, the environment, and is one of the two patron saints of Italy
(with Catherine of Siena). It is customary for Catholic and Anglican
churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of October
4. James Quinn (b. Glasgow, Scotland, April 21, 1919; d. Edinburgh,
Scotland, April 8, 2010) was a Roman Catholic Jesuit priest who was
ordained in 1950. The tune to which hymn 593 is set is Dickinson College,
written by Lee Hastings Bristol Jr., who wrote two songs for the college in
1959. Both hymns were first performed at the baccalaureate ceremonies
that year, but this particular tune has stood the test of time.
