Musescore: Free music composition software

I like musescore, I'm still a beginner musician but I used it for the first time just a month ago and it's not too difficult to learn. I've used it to replicate really hard to read blurry music from IMSLP so I can print it out and have a much easier time reading the music.

I also have used the play feature when I'm not sure I'm playing a piece quite right.

Is this app able to just jot the notes down automatically on the staff if someone is just playing music on the piano ? I just want to play music on piano and have an app to convert that to sheet music while I am playing it. So basically take input from microphone, detect the notes and put them on the staff.

I now use nothing else. It's a joy to interact with. Copying and pasting is a breeze, so too transposing (no silly accidentals), no need for constant tool changes, the arrow does it all, even page dragging. To play back from anywhere just click a note and hit the space bar. Export as Midi, right click and 'open with...' (Logic or whatever) to get a better playback although the native playback is OK for aural checking etc and there are loads of instruments, even a Bandoneon. The team can be arrogant and obstructive at times but they know what they are doing and deserve credit and gratitude. Excellent!

I need its functionality to transcribe what I am playing in real-time on my digital piano. Supposedly, MuseScore has this capability. I want to play something on my digital piano and have it show up in musical notation on my tablet or computer.

I've been using musescore for a while now, and didn't know about the letters and numbers keys as shortcuts for notes and durations--thanks!

Many students would learn pieces below tempo. You want to leave the original recommended tempo unchanged. If you change the tempo and press Save by mistake, the MuseScore file would have the slower tempo. The quick way to drop the playback speed without changing the tempo in the score is to open the Play Panel under View and move the Tempo slider down from 100%.

I use Musescore to notate music that I've written. I'm trained in music theory but am a terrible piano player. Musescore helps me overcome that problem! I can pretend to play things I really can't.

I picked up a MIDI keyboard, for about $100, to help enter the notes. It isn't necessary, but for some the tactile feel of a keyboard is helpful, and I'm one of those.

Best general, basic intro to MuseScore. However, re composing, would it be so much easier to play instrument(s) and record in MIDI, save as .mid files. Then, just play recorded midi file in MuseScore, which will turn file into sheet music. A lot easier than manually input notes one by one.
Further edit and refine as necessary, and playing/composition can be published or be first draft for further work and embellishment later.
But, thanks very much for this excellent intro of sw, with or without subscription.

Dorico also is free and is my new all time favourite music notation software, I can't recommend it enough. Also implements integration with VSTs and VST fx, also everything you compose in notation is immediately translated into MIDI and it goes both ways.
