12News' Hurricane Headquarters and the National Hurricane Center are keeping a close eye on the Gulf of Mexico and what is now Tropical Storm Nicholas.

The system could be a big rainmaker for our area, starting Sunday night and lasting for several days. However, modeling suggests Nicholas will become a remnant low by Thursday, meaning it could move out of the Southeast Texas area quicker.

Right now, winds of Tropical Storm Nicholas are at 40 miles per hour. It's moving to the north-northwest at 15 miles per hour. Nicholas is expected to gradually strengthen as it approaches the northwestern Gulf coast Monday.

The center of Nicholas is forecast to pass near the coast of northeastern Mexico and south Texas on Monday, and move onshore along the coast of south or central Texas Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
