3 Decade firefighter here. I congratulate you on all of your information.
I have just one pick-up point. In the video you use the flat of your hand to touch the door. Always use the back of one hand to test for heat, it's more sensitive and the natural reaction to pull back is increased. More importantly you risk burning your palm which could make escape harder, more painful or even in worst case impossible.

Electrician here. To anyone going out to replace old smoke detectors make sure you pick up the dual type sensors with the older Ionization technology and the new photoelectric tech as well.

For a long time we had ionization only alarms and those are great at picking up large particulate smoke like from burning dinner on the stove, but not so much the smaller smoldering fires which are typical of the types that start house fires.

The photoelectric technology will pick up these fires much quicker because it is more sensitive to the smaller particulate smoke coming off burning plastics (like a candle knocked over on a polyester sofa cover) and give you much more time to react.

Kris,
Clear the outside perimeter of your home, taking away flammable materials like grass clippings, leaves, boxes (anything combustible). Also, know where your gas cutoff valve is located that feeds your home, and how to turn it off. 😊

Notification squad present! I dodged a mulch fire outside my doctors office yesterday next to my vehicle, another reminder to carry a fire extinguisher rated for automotive use in your car.

Great video! My spouse thinks me putting fire extinguishers in every room, as well as 2 each in the kitchen and garage is overkill. Then I went and put a carbon monoxide detector on each side of our bed and one in her office and the kitchen for good measure. 😂😂

*Keep doorways and stairs clear!* The last thing you want to do is have to move things out of the way before you can get out, or to trip on your stairs and hurt yourself. Those seconds matter so much.

Close doors; that's the basic containment. If you can feel the warmth of a fire on the other side, imagine if that door had been open! The fire would have just torn through.

Kris can you do a video about how to protect your house from wild fires. I live in an area that we rarely get fires. However this year the creeks are dry, the grass is brown and I breathed in smoke from the Canadian wild fires for two days, etc.. Could you do a video on this. I think we’re are all going to be drier and face this issue. Thanks

Have a plan and practice! When the emergency occurs you will not be thinking straight and need to be able to work largely on auto-pilot. Don't ask me how I know this!

Some really good tips!
When checking doors to see if there is fire/heat on the other side of it you can use the back of your hand to touch the doorknob for heat. A metal doorknob will transfer heat very quickly so please be careful to ‘tap’ the handle with your hand don’t just grab the handle as it can severely burn your hand. I’d also encourage you to use your non-dominant hand to check for the heat. If you get a burn on that hand it won’t impact your daily activities as bad as if you injury your dominant hand.
Take care and prep on!
